Speaker & mic
Speaker and microphone repair in Ipswich, at your door
If people keep asking you to repeat yourself, or every call sounds like it is coming from the next room, the fault is nearly always a blocked or failed speaker or microphone. It is one of the quicker repairs and one of the most satisfying, because the difference is obvious the moment it is done.

What causes it
Why this happens
- Blocked speaker mesh
- Dust and pocket lint pack into the earpiece mesh until sound cannot get out. Calls go quiet, but the loudspeaker still works fine — that combination is the giveaway.
- A blown loudspeaker
- Music and ringtones crackle or buzz at volume. The driver has failed, usually from age or from a spell at maximum volume.
- A microphone nobody can hear
- You can hear them, they cannot hear you. Often the bottom microphone has been blocked or damaged, and voice notes and speakerphone go first.
- Water in the earpiece
- Muffled sound after a soaking is corrosion on the speaker contacts. It rarely improves on its own.
- A screen protector over the earpiece slot
- A protector fitted slightly high covers part of the earpiece cut-out and muffles every call. We see this more than you would expect, and it costs nothing to rule out — we check it before we open anything.

Questions
The things people ask
Could it be a setting rather than a fault?
It can. Noise cancellation and a stuck Bluetooth connection both cause this. We check the easy things first — we would rather spend five minutes than sell you a speaker you did not need.
They cannot hear me but speakerphone works. Why?
Most phones have more than one microphone. If the bottom one has failed, the phone falls back to another for speakerphone, which is why one works and the other does not.
Do you test it before you go?
Yes, on a real call, with you listening.
